STRIP: heritage & tourism
two sides of the same coin?
24.02.2023
In recent years, there has been a growing discourse regarding the interplay between heritage sites and tourism. The conservation and protection of cultural and archaeological sites is deemed essential, however, it is also necessary to ensure their sustainable management which requires adequate financial support.
As both tourism and cultural activities are significant, countries with numerous heritage sites are working on finding a balance between preserving these sites for future generations while still making them accessible for current visitors to appreciate and absorb.
Malta is gradually realizing that its heritage, which once reflected the way of life of its people, is now becoming a valuable cultural attraction for tourists.
Tourism and preservation of heritage have been criticized as opposing sides, but are they really just two sides of the same coin?
